French international Anthony Martial has been ruled out of the Champions League clash with Swiss champions Young Boys due to injury. Martial sustained a knee injury during Manchester United training and will miss the home game against the Swiss team as a result.

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick provided the update on Martial during his pre-match press conference for the Young Boys duel. The German also gave an update on the injured duo of Edison Cavani and Frenchman Raphael Varane. On the duo of Varane and Cavani, Rangnick told reporters that they won’t be in the squad for the Young Boys game as they just returned to training after several weeks on the sidelines.

Summer signing Varane has been missing for the better part of the last five weeks after he picked up a thigh problem in the first half of the Manchester United clash with hosts Atalanta in the Champions League last month. On his part, veteran striker Cavani has been battling with tendon issues since the Spurs game in the league over five weeks ago.

Manchester United can secure a fourth win in five Champions League games with an home win over a Young Boys who are at the bottom of Group F but they can still qualify for Europa League football. Young Boys will have any chance of qualifying for the Europa League via the Champions League if they can secure third place in their group and that can only happen with an away win over Manchester United. Also, they would be hoping that Atalanta in third place lose their game against hosts Villarreal in the other Group F clash.

Manchester United went down 2-1 to Young Boys away from home when the two teams met on the opening day of this season’s Champions League group stage campaign. Manchester United had Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent off in the first half of that game.
